What Phone Number Should a Dental Office Put on Its Google Business Profile?

Put the number that rings that office and that the practice controls. Use a local number instead of a central call center helpline whenever possible, and do not use a premium number or a number that sends callers to another business. Google allows one primary number and up to two more. Coverage does not require a new profile number.

This page is for the owner or office manager filling in the phone field on the Google Business Profile for one dental office.

What phone number should a dental office put on Google?

Put the number that connects callers to that office and that the practice controls. Use a local number rather than a central call center helpline, and do not use a premium number or a number that sends callers to another business.

Google's Business Profile guidelines, in the section labeled Website and phone, say to provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location, or a website that represents that location. Use a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline number whenever possible. The number must be under the direct control of the business. Do not provide a phone number or URL that redirects or refers users to another business, including a page on a social site. Premium phone numbers are not acceptable, regardless of the rate charged to the caller. Additional phone numbers can be used on Google Business Profile websites and other local surfaces.

For a dental office, that is the number patients already use for this location. A group helpline is the central line to avoid when a local number exists. A number the practice cannot change or turn off is not under its direct control. Categories, hours, photos, services, and reviews belong on the Google Business Profile checklist. This page stays on the phone field.

How do the primary phone and additional phones differ?

The primary number is the main number on the profile, and Google lets you add up to two more as a mobile or a landline. Fax numbers cannot be added, and you can hide the number.

Google's help page on adding a phone number says you can add up to two numbers besides the primary one. Mobile and landline numbers can be added. Fax numbers cannot. You can hide the phone number on the profile.

Field What Google documents What to put there
Primary phone The main number on the profile The number that rings this office
Additional phones Up to two more. Mobile or landline. No fax. A second line the practice controls, or your office number if a tracking number is primary
Hidden number You can hide the phone number Hide it only if the listing should not show a number to call

Open the profile, choose Edit profile, then Contact, then the phone field. Set the country, enter the digits, and save. You do not have to type a country code, parentheses, or dashes. Select Add phone number for another line. Then call the listing while you are open, at lunch, and after close. A number that rings where nobody sits still fails. Hide the number only when the listing should not offer a call.

Can a dental office use a call tracking number on Google Business Profile?

Google's phone guidelines do not describe call tracking. A common vendor practice, documented by WhatConverts, puts the tracking number in the primary field and the office number in an additional phone field, and that setup is not a Google rule.

WhatConverts' help page for Google Business Profile tells its customers to move the current business number to an additional phone and set the primary phone to the tracking number. The original number then stays visible as a secondary contact, and the tracking number should forward to the destination number. They describe this as a way to track calls from the profile while keeping the office number on the listing.

The guidelines still apply. The practice has to control the number. It has to connect to this location, and it must not send callers to another business. A tracking number the practice can turn off, that forwards only to this office, can be the primary phone, with your office number kept as an additional phone. How tracking numbers, UTM tags, and GA4 fit a report is on the marketing ROI tracking page. The profile holds one primary number and up to two more, not a different number per ad.

Should every location use the same phone number on Google?

No, not when each office has its own line. Each profile should use a number that connects to that location, and a local number instead of a central call center helpline whenever possible.

Put that office's line on that office's profile. A shared helpline is the fallback only when an office has no line of its own. Whoever answers has to cover that location at lunch and after close. A queue that treats every office as one office is the central helpline again.

Should the Google Business Profile phone match the website and the sign?

Yes. Publish the same number on the profile, the website, and the sign, so each one reaches that office.

If those three show different lines, the patient cannot tell which one rings the desk. Pick the number the practice answers, and take the others off public pages. A website that swaps a tracking number by campaign belongs on the marketing ROI page, not in this field. The profile number stays the stable number for that location: your office number, or a tracking number the practice controls with your office number kept as an additional phone.

What happens to the Google number when you add an answering service or an AI receptionist?

Leave your office number on the profile and route the inbound calls. Adding an answering service or an AI receptionist does not require a new number on Google.

A shared answering-service number that also serves other practices is the central call center line the guidelines say to avoid when you have a local number. Keep your office number as the published number, and send inbound calls from it to the service.

Aria is set up so the published number can stay. The FAQ says Aria sits on the existing phone system, supports SIP forwarding from any major VoIP or carrier setup, and does not require number porting. The integrations page says Aria works with VoIP, SIP, or a traditional carrier, also with no number porting, and that calls are routed to Aria first, with a transfer to the team when a person needs to take the call. Aria answers inbound calls. After-hours answering uses the same number when the office is closed. Lunch and overflow do too. What changes is who picks up.

  1. Leave your office number on the profile. Use it as the primary phone, or as an additional phone if a tracking number the practice controls is primary.
  2. Confirm the practice can change or disconnect every number on the profile.
  3. Route inbound calls from the published number to the desk, the answering path, or Aria. For Aria, that is SIP forwarding on the system you already have. No port.
  4. Call the listing at lunch and after close. Write down whether the desk, an answering service, Aria, or a recording answers.
